Washing

This symbol says whether domestic laundering is or is not possible and applies both to washing by hand or by machine. The numbers in the wash-tub correspond to the maximum washing temperatures in degrees Celsius and must not be exceeded. A bar below the wash-tub means that gentle handling is required with a reduced amount of laundry and slower speed during the spin-dry cycle.

Boil wash

Laundry made for example of cotton or linen, white, boil-proof, dyed or printed. Fill drum completely. Set the respective wash cycle.

60°C coloured laundry

Laundry made for example of cotton or linen, white, boil-proof, dyed or printed. Fill drum completely. Set the respective wash cycle.

40°C coloured laundry

Wash cycle for example for dark coloured articles made of cotton, polyester, blended fabrics etc. Set the respective wash cycle.

30° C coloured laundry

Wash cycle for example for dark coloured articles made of cotton, polyester, blended fabrics etc. Set the respective wash cycle.

30°C easy-care

“Easy-care” items, for example, those made from modal, viscose or synthetic fibres (acrylic, polyester and polyamide). Reduce the volume of laundry (drum up to half full). Use the relevant washing programme. Do not spin or use only a short spin to avoid creases.

Do not wash

Any items bearing this label may not be washed. They may react adversely to moisture, or due to their size are unsuitable for washing in a household washing machine.

Drying in the tumble dryer

The square is the symbol for the drying process. The circle in it provides information on drying in a tumble dryer. The number of dots in the drying drum specify the drying levels. If there is no tumble dryer symbol, then the symbols for washing and ironing give some information on drying. The more intensive the permissible type of handling, the simpler drying is. The lower the care levels, the more caution is necessary when drying in the tumble dryer. The program text does not currently clearly state which textiles are suitable for drying (tumble dryer) for all appliances.

General instructions for drying in a household tumble dryer

• Spin-dry the laundry at the highest speed possible before drying (as high as the laundry symbol permits).
• Do not overfill the drum of the dryer.
• Only put items with the same drying time in the dryer together. Cotton and synthetics, for example, have different drying times and therefore reach a specific residual dampness after different drying times.
• Do not over-dry laundry; it uses energy unnecessarily.
• Do not dry items in the tumble dryer if they, or their shape, are sensitive to heat.
• Always observe the manufacturer‘s operating instructions.
  

Normal drying

Drying possible in the tumble dryer with normal loading without restriction.

Gentle drying

Exercise caution when drying in the tumble dryer. Select gentle treatment with reduced loading (temperature, drying time).

Do not tumble dry

Article unsuitable for drying in the tumble dryer.

Bleaching

The triangle provides information on whether the article can or cannot be bleached.

All types of bleaches

The empty triangle is the symbol for chlorine or oxygen bleaching.

Oxygen bleaching

Only oxygen bleaching (contained in universal detergents) is permitted, but not chlorine bleaching.

Do not bleach

The empty triangle with an X through it symbolises that bleaching is not possible. Only use detergents that are free of bleach.

Ironing

The dots identify the temperature ranges of the iron (regulator, steam, travel irons as well as ironing machines). In common irons, these setting ranges are sometimes also assigned to specific raw materials. The maximum temperature must be selected solely on the basis of the care symbol and not according to the raw material content of a textile article.

Hot iron

Also corresponds to the „Cotton/linen“ temperature setting of the iron. Iron while damp or moisten as required. Use an ironing cloth on shiny or pressure-sensitive items or iron them inside out. A steam iron can be used.

Iron at moderate temperature

„Corresponds to the „Wool/silk/polyester/viscose“ temperature setting. Iron under a moderately moist intermediate cloth. A steam iron can be used. Avoid heavy pressure. Do not pull out of shape.

Iron at low temperature

Corresponds to the “Polyacrylic, polyamide (nylon), acetate” setting. If necessary, shiny or pressure-sensitive items should be ironed with a dry press cloth or inside out. Caution when using steam irons (as a rule, work without steam). Do not pull out of shape.

Do not iron

Unsightly, irreversible changes are to be expected if an iron is used.

Professional textile care

The symbol gives information on whether professional textile care is or is not recommended. With this new care symbol, both organic solvents as well as special wet processes are taken into consideration; therefore the care symbol differentiates between dry cleaning (formerly called chemical cleaning) and wet cleaning.

Dry cleaning

The letters within the circle are intended for professional textile cleaners. They give information on the solvents that can be used during the cleaning process. The bar below the circle indicates that certain limitations in the dry-cleaning process are required. These may concern the mechanical action, addition of moisture, bath and/or drying temperature. When choosing the cleaning process, the professional textile cleaner must also take into account the nature of the textile materials and the degree of soiling (normal/mild process).

Treatment in cleaning machines with the following solvents: perchloroethylene, hydrocarbons

Normal cleaning process with no restrictions. Commercial stain removers on a solvent base may be used with some restrictions. A trial on a concealed part of the article is advisable beforehand.
